Trump's foreign and economic policy is met with great skepticism at home

The majority of Americans have rejected President Donald Trump's radical economic and foreign policy, or at least have very mixed feelings. This is the result of recent surveys by the US survey institute Pew Research. 52 percent disapprove of the withdrawal from the World Health Organization, 32 percent are in favour. 46 percent are against withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement, 32 percent in favour. And 45 percent of Americans do not think that the end of most USAID programs, i.e. the most important development funding in the USA, 35 percent think that is correct.

The Trump administration's treatment of Russia (compared to Ukraine) is too lenient and unbalanced, criticised 43% of respondents. However, just under a third believe that Trump is struggling to maintain a balanced stance towards both countries.

The new US administration's tariff policy is also not met with undivided approval by the majority, although the survey could not even take into account the most recent escalation, the expansion and in some cases massive increase in tariffs - in the case of China to over 104 per cent - because it was concluded at the end of March. A majority (52 per cent) expect higher tariffs on Chinese imports into the USA to have a negative impact on the USA and 53 per cent expect it to have a negative impact on themselves. 24 per cent view this policy positively, as expected significantly more Republicans (44 per cent) than Democrats (5 per cent). However, more sympathisers or members of the conservative party fear that the impact on them personally will be negative rather than positive (30 to 17 percent).

The idea of taking over Greenland is strongly rejected by a majority of Americans, 54 percent are against and 23 percent in favour. There too, however, the position of Republicans and Democrats differs significantly: 28 percent from the MAGA party are against and 41 percent in favour, 81 percent of Democrats are against and only six percent in favour of future American control of the island. Even the Republicans are very skeptical about taking over the Gaza Strip: 44 percent reject it, only 27 percent vote in favour. The Democratic Party's rejection is similar to Greenland: 80 percent are against, five percent are in favour. Overall, 62 percent of Americans — for the most part categorically — oppose a Gaza takeover. gd
