As if Uzbekistan wanted to become a model member state of the United Nations at full speed: It is already the second visit by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in the Central Asian country, which has extremely close and exemplary relations and cooperation with the UN.

The host, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, as soon as he was greeted at Kuksaroy, the presidential palace, he listed everything that is happening at full speed between his country and the world organization.

  • Since the beginning of this year alone, five UN Under-Secretary Generals have visited Uzbekistan.
  • 140 joint programs and projects were implemented.
  • 10 special resolutions of the UN General Assembly were adopted on the initiative of the Uzbek side.
  • In May, Uzbekistan was elected to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
  • Uzbekistan was elected to the Board of Directors of the International Labour Organization.
  • For the first time, an Uzbek is a member of the UN Human Rights Committee.
  • A representative office of the UN specialized agency of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) began work in Tashkent.
  • Uzbekistan is hosting UN conferences on food security, tourism development, poverty and climate change, and biodiversity protection.
  • In 2025, Samarkand will host the 43rd General Conference of UNESCO.
  • Guterres also received Uzbekistan's highest state award, the “Oliy Darajali Dustlik” (friendship at the highest level).

However, the talks were not only about the dynamics of close relations, but also about difficult issues of international security and stability. With regard to Afghanistan — a neighboring country of Uzbekistan — not only humanitarian aid for the population was discussed, but also the question of how the international community could develop a joint strategy vis-à-vis the Taliban country.
