Kaja Kallas, who has just resigned as Prime Minister of Estonia, has been nominated as High Representative of the European Union for Foreign and Security Policy. In doing so, she becomes the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the EU.
The 47-year-old Estonian politician is the fourth person to hold this EU post and follows the Spaniard Josep Borrell after, who is now 77 years old. His predecessors were the Italian Federica Mogherini and the British Cathrine Ashton. Previously, the title was different, the function was similar. Former Austrian Foreign Minister Benita Ferrero-Waldner, for example, was responsible for the EU's external relations for a long time.
As head of government of Estonia, Kallas was a big supporter of Ukraine and a tough critic of the Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Just last March, she was a guest at a conference in Berlin entitled “80 Years of Journey to Bondage” in memory of the Nobel Prize winner in economics Friedrich August von Hayek, hosted by the Hayek Foundation. In her speech, she not only spoke about economics as defined by Hayek, but also outlined the foreign policy situation. She warned against further Russian aggression. Liberal democracy is Russia's greatest enemy. That is why the West needs firm resolve. It was four months ago and already sounded like an application speech for the new post of EA foreign affairs representative.
