In Germany, newly appointed ambassadors can only officially act after they have presented their credentials to the Federal President. After the ceremony, they become official representatives of their country. During the ceremony, the flag of the ambassador's home country is raised in the middle of three flagpoles between the European flag and the German federal flag.
