The government in Beijing is still holding back on high-level personnel. But it has already been leaked out who is coming to Berlin as the new ambassador of the People's Republic of China shortly: It is the America expert Deng Hongbo.
China's previous ambassador Ken Wu said goodbye on Friday with a reception at his embassy. He led the mission in Germany for five years. The diplomat, who speaks good German, had previously been ambassador to Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands, among others. His departure from Germany is also his departure from his diplomatic career. Ken Wu retires.
Until now, his successor has mostly had to do with American topics. He was an envoy at the Chinese Embassy in Washington for many years. His other positions were also mostly about relations between China and the USA. The exception was his ambassador post in Kenya. In between, he was Deputy Director on the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and was therefore partly responsible for the direction of Chinese foreign policy. Rumor has it that the top diplomat could one day become foreign minister of the People's Republic.
By the way, with the rapid replacement of the ambassador post, Berlin is being treated better than the European Union. Because China had taken several months to fill the Chinese EU embassy in Brussels.
